Police hunt for high-speed driver

By JESSE GRAHAM

UPDATE: 3 February.

POLICE have identified the driver who sparked a police chase through the Yarra Valley yesterday and will be making an arrest as soon as possible.

The 28 year old Melbourne driver of a champagne-coloured Holden VT Commodore refused to pull over in Lilydale yesterday afternoon at around 1pm.

The driver then led at least five police cars on a high-speed chase through to Healesville at 1.30pm, speeding through the main street in town towards the Black Spur.

However, police called off the pursuit near Old Fernshaw Road in Healesville, due to the driver’s speed and safety concerns.

Healesville Police Sergeant Stewart Thomson said that the driver had been identified and will be arrested and interviewed “in due course”.

Sgt Thomson said that their vehicle will likely be impounded, and police will charge the driver with traffic and criminal offences, including conduct endangering life.

It is believed a police helicopter was also part of the chase.

Anyone with information, or who may have witnessed the car chase, is asked to call Healesville Police on 5962 4422 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
