A HEALESVILLE man is targeting the Yarra Valley in his efforts to introduce a form of archery that has links back to the Japanese Samauri.
Jerry Osadczuk started Japanese archery in the late ’80s as an ex-pat living in Japan with his new Japanese wife.
“It is a very old form of archery and one of the things the Samaurai class would let the peasants do to entertain themselves,” Mr Osadczuk said.
They made sure, however, that the arrows couldn’t be too effective by creating a shorter bow and longer arrow and a method of shooting which has requires the archer to sit on the floor.
That makes it a perfect activity for older people, both men and women, as the equipment is much lighter than the Western-style of bow and arrow.
“My wife’s grandfather was in his 90s and still enjoying it.
“Even people with weaker muscles can manage to pull the lighter bow,” Mr Osadczuk said.
“Apart from the physical aspect, it’s a very relaxing activity and good for concentration, good for self-control and it gets you out of your comfort zone; it’s good for the temperament,” he added.
Mr Osadczuk said he enjoys the sport and would like to share his enjoyment with others by starting up a club in Healesville.
He has all the equipment and the experience to help others who are interested in learning a new skill and perhaps getting out of their own comfort zone.
Anyone who is interested can contact Mr Osadczuk on 0466 598 119.
