It was celebrations a plenty for local whitewater enthusiasts on Saturday 19 November with the launch of the inaugural ‘Rubicon River Rally’ (RRR).
The RRR is a whitewater kayaking race down the spectacular Rubicon River, with participants having to negotiate several grade 3 rapids along the natural course.
River safety was provided by in water swiftwater rescue trained technicians, to ensure a safe event for competitors.
Time trials were conducted over a 1km section of river that started at the Top Footbridge and concluded at ‘Creamie’s Bark’ rapid, near Kendall’s Camp.
The event was put together by the Warburton and Alexandra River Dogs (WARD) with the aim to showcase the health, social and economic benefits of canoe and kayak sports.
Recreational river paddling has gained momentum in recent years and the WARD is passionate about promoting the sport in a safe and enjoyable way.
Co-organiser of the RRR Sean Marler was thrilled with the turnout that saw kayakers visiting the region from as far away as Canada and Tasmania.
“It was fabulous to see some paddlers visiting the area for the first time, with several staying local and supporting businesses while in town”, said Mr Marler.
The Upper Yarra and Central Highlands region boasts some of the best whitewater rivers in the state with Sevens Creek, Goulburn and Yarra River also very popular at certain river flows.
Overall winners in the 2022 RRR was Nors Corstorphan (female category) in a time of 3:44. Max Gerrard (men’s category) took overall line honours and was awarded race champion in a time of 3:24.
