SORTING and weighing throwaway lunch wrappings, bottles and cartons gave Yellingbo Primary School students a picture of just how much waste their lunches generate.
Teacher Dorothy Connop said the students had taken a keen interest in how much rubbish they were contributing to landfill and the pollution of the environment.
Lunch rubbish was collected for several weeks, classified, sorted and weighed so a comparison could be made on ‘Rubbish Free Lunch Day’.
“The children made a special effort to bring their lunches in re-useable containers for the State Government’s Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge day and considerably reduced the amount of rubbish generated,” she said.
The results were impressive and their effort was recognised when Education Minister Jacinta Allen presented the school with a $250 award at a presentation in Melbourne.
Ms Connop said the children at Yellingbo Primary School were making a determined effort to continue their good work, by consistently bringing their lunches in re-useable containers.
