YARRA Ranges cyclist Rob Amos is back on the bike and back on track with some gold-winning rides.
After winning the Victorian State Road Race Championships at Anglesea in August, he dominated the Australian Veteran Cycling Championships in Adelaide taking first-place honours in the road race and the criterium in the 45-49 age group.
In the 105-kilometre road race he rode away with Mike Elleway of South Australia and with over 50 kilometres to go they steadily increased their lead to finish over 10 minutes clear of the bunch.
In the criterium, held in Milane town centre on an 800-metre circuit over 45 minutes, Amos broke away early in the race and lapped every rider in the field.
Amos, 47, says he is thrilled with the wins.
He competed as a junior and returned to the sport four years ago when the World Masters was held in Melbourne.
He competes with the Eastern Veterans Cycle Club in team events and says the sport, which is growing in popularity, can be extremely competitive.
“We have 250 people in our club and some clubs have more than 400 members.”
With daylight saving just a few weeks away, Amos said he is looking forward to the night competitions at Sandown which can see more than 200 riders take to the track.
