THE sight of thousands of litres of water going down the drain raised the ire of some Healesville residents last week.
The Mail received three phone calls on Monday complaining about water being pumped out of the Healesville outdoor pool into the drain
Ourdoor pools around the shire are being cleaned up for summer.
The callers questioned why the water wasn’t being pumped onto the adjoining Queen’s Park oval, or cleaned up and recycled in some other way.
The official word from the Shire of Yarra Ranges is that after eight months of exposure to the elements, including flocks of wild ducks which make the pool their winter resort, the water is seriously contaminated.
“It’s just not possible to put the water through the pool’s filter system with so much duck poo and leaves contaminating the water,” explained Shire of Yarra Ranges spokesman Simone Ryan.
“For environmental and health reasons the water is put into the sewer system. It is just too polluted to empty anywhere else,” Ms Ryan said.
