USING money from the government funded Schoolyard Blitz Program, students at Yering Primary School have made their very own vegie patch in the school’s backyard.
During the holidays the kids and their parents helped make three vegie plots which have been assigned to different year levels.
After much hard work and dedication, the kids are finally reaping the rewards.
“Yesterday we found our first snow pea,” said Sebastian from grade prep.
The snow pea will be carefully harvested and divided between the hardworking gardeners.
The kids can also expect to see lettuces, beetroot, carrots, tomatoes, bokchoy and capsicums, to name just a few.
The veggie patch is part of Yering Primary School’s new healthy eating and lifestyle initiative that encourages kids to learn and appreciate natural food.
As more vegies appear they’ll be using them to cook a range of tasty soups and salads.
The children tend to the garden regularly and are excited about tasting their own produce.
But for now, the snow pea will have to make do!
