BENDIGO Bank was the victim of a clever scam recently when an email was forged in the company’s name to trick customers into revealing their banking details. The forged email used authentic banking message which the scammers tweaked to create their own message.
The email claimed the bank was receiving complaints from customers for unauthorised uses of some Bendigo e-banking accounts and as a result they were temporarily shutting down some “vulnerable” accounts.
It then instructed customers to ‘reconfirm’ their identity by clicking on a false web link.
The message stated: “As a first step to have your Bendigo e-banking access reactivated please reconfirm your identity by using the link provided below.”
The email is being investigated by authorities.
