PEOPLE who drive unroadworthy vehicles could face charges of culpable driving under a new tough stance by the Yarra Ranges traffic management unit.
Sergeant John Morgan said it was crucial for people to maintain their cars in extreme weather conditions.
“Now that it is raining consistently it is very important for people to check their vehicle’s tyres,” he said.
“We will be running some operations in the next month or so and any vehicles found with bald tyres will be put off the road immediately and towed away.”
One driver caught by the TMU was seen zig-zagging across Clegg Road in heavy rain and was later found to have no windscreen wipers.
Instead, he had been wiping the rain off his windscreen when he stopped at traffic lights.
“The stupidity of these people never ceases to amaze me,” Sgt Morgan said.
Sgt Morgan said police would be attending fatal collisions and if the car involved was found to be unroadworthy, culpable driving charges could be laid and a jail term would be likely.
“This wasn’t something that just happened. He had decided to use a damn squeegee in his car as a solution.”
