Feeling good about food

By Kath Gannaway
DON’T expect to zip in to Village Greens for a quick shop.
Catching up, having a chat and taking time to discover the latest new addition to the shelves is very much part of the Village Greens shopping experience.
Owners Tim and Marina Stewart have had the fruit and vegie shop at Yarra Junction for almost three years, but it has been part of the local social shopping scene for 18 years.
While the organic produce is a big feature for many of Tim and Marina’s customers, Marina said they are seeing an increasing number of people coming in for conventionally grown produce.
“They tell us they like the fact it is Australian produce and they know it is going to be fresh, good quality and reasonably priced,” Marina said.
“We put in the extra effort to make sure we have local produce on the shelves and the benefit flows throughout the community.”
After working away from the town for many years, Marina said being part of the fabric of the community is one of the things they really like about being in the shop.
“It’s a very social place. There are always people standing around having a chat and that’s great.”
On the shelves, customers can look forward to the new season’s stone fruit which Marina said is not too far away and, in the meantime, make the most of the opportunity to check out the organic grocery section.
Village Greens has also introduced the Living Earth range of wholefood supplements – also known as “feel good foods”, from Peru.
Ask about the raw cacao beans!
Village Greens is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 5.30pm and from 7am to 1pm on Saturday.
