Vandals set for video

STREET vandals are being told to smile for the camera thanks to a new closed circuit television system in the main street of Healesville.
McEwen MP Fran Bailey secured $100,000 for the system to be installed near the toilet block at the intersection of Green Street to deter people from crime.
The system has already been successful in Lilydale at the railway station and bus terminal and Healesville Police hope it will have the same effect in Healesville.
“They are a great assistance in ensuring the safety of our local community,” the town’s Sergeant Tony Van Gorp said.
Licensee of The Grand Hotel in Healesville, Des Harrington says the plan to install CCTV in the main street are ‘fantastic’ and that there should be more of them.
“We’ve got to get to this stage to protect the community,” he said.
“It’s a necessary evil.”
Ms Bailey said the new CCTV system would assist police by acting as a deterrent.
“I live and work in Healesville and like many other residents, I get sick of irresponsible driver on our streets or people damaging public and private property,” Ms Bailey said.
“CCTV is a great system for making our streets and public areas safer and more enjoyable for local residents and visitors alike.”
