RESIDENTS in the Yarra Valley are being urged to ‘Put the Finger on Crime’ as part of National Crime Stoppers Day on Friday 15 February.
On this day residents of the Yarra Ranges will be asked to ‘Save this number – 1800 333 000 – to save the day!’ by saving the toll free number into their mobile phones.
Most importantly, Australians are encouraged to make the anonymous call to Crime Stoppers if they have any information that may assist in an investigation.
Chief executive officer of Crime Stoppers Victoria Peter Sprott said that Crime Stoppers was a vital part of policing the Yarra Ranges.
“It is a shining example of the good that can be achieved when police and citizens work together,” said Mr Sprott said.
“Without Crime Stoppers thousands of crimes committed in Victoria could go unsolved and unnoticed.” In 2007, Crime Stoppers Victoria received more than 37,564 phone calls resulting in 1062 arrests, 4458 charges, more than $2.53 million in stolen goods recovered and $10.85 million in narcotics seized.
“Crime Stoppers is one of the most important resources we have in this country when it comes to creating a safer society.
“However, as the Crime Stoppers program began nearly 21 years ago in Victoria many people in the Yarra Ranges may no longer be aware of the crucial role Crime Stoppers plays in fighting crime or, more importantly, don’t know the Crime Stoppers phone number,” Mr Sprott said.
Chairman of Crime Stoppers Australia said that by saving the Crime Stoppers number into phones on Crime Stoppers Day, the community will have access to a quick, convenient and confidential crime fighting service.
“Every single call made to Crime Stoppers can help to reduce criminal activity in Victoria, and that is why we want everyone to save the free call telephone number – 1800 333 000 – into their phones on Crime Stoppers Day,” Mr Price said.
Since it began operation in 1987, Crime Stoppers Victoria has received more than 500,000 phone calls, and the information received has led to more than 10,000 arrests, has helped to recover more than $101 million in narcotics and $30.7 million in stolen property.
Crime Stoppers Australia is the peak Australian body that helps state and territory Crime Stoppers programs.
Crime Stoppers Australia is supported by the federal and state police, the state and territory governments and the Australian Department of Justice but relies primarily on the Australian community for its continued success.
