The Victorian Labor Party has said it would support Christine Fyffe in the Speaker's Chair.

CHAOS has erupted in the Victorian Parliament, as the push for Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe to step into the Speaker’s position flared up before dying down.
Members in the Lower House shouted over the top of one another through question time this afternoon as Labor continued with their push to challenge the position of current speaker, Ken Smith.
Monbulk MP James Merlino said the majority of parliament, which includes Frankston MP Geoff Shaw, does not support the current speaker and would support Deputy Speaker Ms Fyffe taking up his role.
“The Opposition has made it clear that we would support, in his place, the election of the deputy speaker as the speaker of this parliament,” he said.
However, the push to challenge the speaker’s position was washed out after Bendigo East MP Jacinta Allen and Mr Merlino, both Labor MPs, were suspended from parliament for the next six sittings.
Ms Fyffe’s office was contacted for comment on the situation, but was unavailable.
Further updates will be posted as they develop.
