A YARRA Junction man has suffered burns to his face and arms after his car caught fire on Wednesday.
Lilydale CIU Detective Senior Constable Mark Smithwick said the car had been broken into the night before and had its sub-woofer speakers stolen.
“The owner of the vehicle pulled over to the side of the road the next day to answer a call from his mum,” Det Sen Con Smithwick said.
“He heard a crackling come from the boot, opened it and saw it was on fire.
“The fire spread to nearby shrubs and he received some nasty burns to his face and arm.”
Det Sen Con Smithwick said the car was destroyed by the fire.
Yarra Junction CFA captain Steve Drennan said the fire quickly spread into trees and grass nearby, but firefighting crews were able to extinguish the blaze in 45 minutes.
