FRESH fruit is playing a vital role in encouraging local primary school students to eat less junk food.
Healesville Primary School is just one of a number of schools in the Eastern Region which last year introduced Free Fruit Friday.
Every Friday, a free shipment of fresh fruit is delivered to the schools to encourage kids to adopt healthy eating practices.
The program has been so successful at Healesville Primary local fruit supplier Toscanos is delivering the fruit earlier in the week so the students can enjoy even more fruity snack days.
The program has been hailed as a great success for the school which has an active philosphy of encouraging students to tap into healthier food options.
The children in eight junior grades get to enjoy a great range of seasonal fruits and teacher Rod Hysted said teachers were reporting from very early on in the program that it was disappearing from the plates very quickly.
Free Fruit Friday is an $11 million Brumby Government initiative that aims to prevent health issues such as obesity and diabetes.
