A recent study by pool maintenance specialists, Poolwerx, found that 44 per cent of aussie pool owners don’t have a CPR chart displayed in their pool area.
According to the Royal Life Saving Society’s National Drowning Report, 291 people drowned in Australia between July 1 2012 and June 30 2013.
The report showed an increase of 15 deaths from the previous year, with 48 of the deaths occurring to people swimming or recreating immediately prior to the drowning.
The study also found 40 per cent of aussie pool owners fail to regularly check the safety of their pool and neglect pool maintenance that is needed for a healthy and clean swimming environment.
Failing to maintain swimming pools can result in unhealthy pH and chlorine levels leading to pool water turning green.
Lilydale Poolwerx owner, Jon Magill, says green water cannot be diagnosed without proper water testing.
“A green or unhealthy pool is caused by the resulting growth of bacteria and algae and can lead to ear, nose and throat infections,” Mr Magill said.
Tips for pool owners include:
-Checking pool equipment is running properly
-Ensure pH levels are healthy
-Chlorinate the pool to disinfect microorganisms
-Vacuum and skim the pool regularly
-Make sure all fencing is secure and a CPR chart is close by and handy
