THE Upper Yarra State Emergency Services (SES) recently hosted an excursion for students from Wesburn Primary School to give them an idea of their role in the Yarra Valley.
SES communications leader and well-respected mentor at the school Kevin Love organised the day that showed the scope of the unit’s activities.
SES volunteers respond to floods, road accidents, search and rescue, as well as providing a support role to other emergency services such as Victoria Police and the CFA.
Unit controller Steve Green said their volunteers welcomed the opportunity to get the message of community service out to younger members of the community.
“It makes them aware of what our role is in the community and if they take that message home it is also a way of making their parents aware,” he said.
Mr Green said young people can join the SES as junior members at 16 and become operational at 18 years.
Following the excursion Wesburn’s Junior School Council voted to donate $100 from fundraising efforts to the SES.
