Lilydale boxers pack a punch

By Monique Ebrington
LILYDALE’s Fight ‘n’ Fitness boxing and kickboxing centre cleaned up the competition at this year’s Victorian amateur boxing finals.
The five fighters competing for Victorian titles last week came away with three gold and three silver medals in their respective fights.
All five fighters placed in top positions of their weight category with Ed Abel earning the title of Victorian senior welterweight champion.
Steve Lambert won his final fight to claim the title of Victorian senior super middleweight boxing champion and Jess Fraser earned the Victorian female junior welterweight title in a convincing win.
Fraser also came home with a silver medal in the Victorian female welterweight division and Shane McDonald was also a silver medallist in the Victorian senior super heavyweight division.
All fighters are trained under the watchful eye of the current world kickboxing champion Nick “Lightning” Lundh who credits their success on hard work.
He said he was thrilled with the club’s overall success at the championships.
“I’m over the moon. I’m very proud of them they’re all good fighters but they’re also good people; they’re disciplined and they push themselves,” Lundh said.
“They all train very hard. You only get out what you put in and that’s reflected in their results.”
Lilydale’s Fight ‘n’ Fitness members Ed Abel, Arjen Jonker and Shane McDonald are competitors in the Australian amateur boxing titles in Townsville this week
The best fighters from across the nation have come together to compete in the three-day competition which begins tomorrow (Wednesday).
“McDonald is the defending Australian champ from last year, I’m expecting Abel to win and Jonker is very new to boxing but he’s exceptionally talented,” Lundh said.
“Just getting to the Australian titles is a remarkable achievement. I think they will all go well at the titles.”
