HEALESVILLE’S upset win over Wandin highlighted a fantastic round of finals action in AFL Yarra Ranges, with the Bloods getting one over their arch rival.
An eight-goal haul from gun forward Ben Monkhurst proved to be a finals performance for the ages as Woori Yallock got the better of their highly fancied opponent, Upwey Tecoma.
Meanwhile, in Division 2, Gembrook-Cockatoo have booked themselves a grand final berth, while Yarra Glen’s season is done and dusted, with Yea putting in a sterling performance when it counted.
Qualifying Final
Division 1 Seniors
Healesville 18.16(124) d Wandin 14.15(99)
Healesville got off to a fast start, kicking 5.1 to 3.2 in the first to take a lead of 11 points into the second quarter. Luckily for Wandin, the margin was not a lot bigger as Healesville kicked 4.9 in the second to 3.4 to increase their lead to 22 points. Wandin struggled to break through the Healesville backline all day and Healesville’s run and carry and delivery up forward was first class. Another 5.5 to 3.2 had the lead at three-quarter time increase to 37 points. Wandin rallied in the last but just could not get back to back goals to maybe break Healesville’s momentum. Wandin actually outscored Healesville, kicking 5.7 to 4.1. Missed opportunities in the last definitely cost Wandin the game. A meeting with Woori Yallock is up for Wandin next week.
Healesville Best: N. Mende (1 goal), J. Nugent (4 goals), D. Anderson (3 goals), N. Aldridge, M. Anson, C. Adams.
Wandin Best: B. Harvey (1 goal), J. Myers, R. Ross (1 goal), S. McDonnell.
Elimination Final
Woori Yallock 16.15(111) d Upwey Tecoma 11.10(76)
Woori Yallock enjoyed a big come-from-behind win to knock Upwey Tecoma out of the finals and book a date against Wandin next week. The first quarter was goal for goal and no one could get the ascendancy. Upwey held a slim 1-point lead heading into the second quarter. Upwey-Tecoma took control in the second, kicking 5.3 to 3.5 and had Woori Yallock worried going into the main break. An 11-point lead was not huge but was an advantage in slippery conditions. Woori Yallock got their game going in the third and completely dominated Upwey kicking 5.2 to 1 behind to turn it around and take a lead of 20 points going into the last. Upwey-Tecoma were running up and down in the same spot and found it hard to find a match up to hold Ben Monkhorst who kicked 8 for the day. Another 4.6 for Woori in the last sealed Upwey’s fate.

Things were all tied up after the third quarter, but Kinglake could have had it in the bag if they had kicked straight. A 1.7 to 3.1 scoreline was going to haunt them. Yarra Glen’s finals campaign has come to a screaming halt. Yea took control early, kicking 5.2 to 3.2 in the first and a 12-point lead. Yea extended their lead to 19 points at half-time and Yarra Glen would have gone into the half-time break wondering where their drive was going to come from. Yarra Glen outscored Yea in the third, kicking 3.4 to 2.3 and reduced the margin to 11 points at three-quarter time. Yarra Glen would have given themselves a real chance and it was game on.
