P-plater clocked at three times speed limit

By Kath Gannaway

A probationary driver clocked by Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol at almost triple the 60km/h speed limit in Wandin North is headed for court.
The Seville 21-year-old P-plater was travelling east on Hunter Road towards Beenak Road, about 4.30pm on Sunday 5 March, when he was caught on police radar doing 179km/h in the 60km/h zone.
Sergeant Anthony Holland of Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol told the Mail that the driver went around him as he stood in the middle of the road, but he was able to record the number plate on the speeding grey Ford utility.
Police went to the registered address and interviewed the driver who was charged with a number of offences including speeding, speed dangerous, evading police and other traffic-related offences, and ordered to surrender the vehicle for impoundment.
Hunter Road is a narrow country road with dirt shoulders.
“At that sort of speed, on any road, you’re putting not only other people, but police at risk,” Sgt Holland said.
The driver will be summonsed to appear at Ringwood Magistrate’s Court at a date to be set.
