AFL YARRA RANGES
Round 13 is done and dusted for Division 1, while Division 2 have put Round 14 behind them.
In Division 1, the fight for the minor premiership is wide open with only four points separating the top four.
In Division 2, it is really between Belgrave and Seville for the minor premiership, but a good backend to the season for Yarra Glen could see them challenging.
In Division 1 netball, Olinda are holding fast on top of the ladder with now Woori Yallock and Wandin fighting it out for second spot, but they are all safe in the top three.
In Division 2 netball, Belgrave are undefeated and clearly on top of the ladder and favourites for the minor and major premierships.
Yarra Glen holds onto second spot with Yarra Junction and Yea fighting it out for third spot.
Division 1 Seniors Football
Upwey Tecoma 13.10(88) d Emerald 12.14(86)
Upwey has all but secured themselves a spot in the top five with a closely fought game on Saturday. Upwey got the early jump kicking 4.4 to 2.1 in the first term and had a slender lead of 15 points. It was a goalkicking feast in the second quarter with 11 goals being kicked but Upwey still had the upper hand with a lead of 21 points at half-time. Emerald rallied in the third term kicking 3.6 to one straight to reduce the lead to only three points at three-quarter time. Emerald kicked 2.5 to 2.4 in the last and could only reduce the margin to two points at the final siren. A third quarter that saw Emerald have nine scoring shots to one came back to bite them in the end.

Healesville 16.12(108) d Mount Evelyn 6.8(44)
Healesville are now sitting atop the ladder after possibly finishing Mount Evelyn’s chances to play in finals this year. The first quarter was tight with only two points separating the teams at quarter time. Healesville capitalised on the wind advantage in the second term kicking 4.6 to two goals to take a 20-point lead at half time. Mount Evelyn could not get the benefits of the wind in the third quarter and only managed to kick two goals to Healesville’s 3.2. The lead at three-quarter time was 28 points and the game was in the bag. Healesville really kicked away in the last holding Mount Evelyn goalless while they piled on six for themselves.

Monbulk 16.12(108) d Warburton-Millgrove 15.9(99)
Monbulk got home by the skin of their teeth on Saturday after a great effort by Warburton-Millgrove. Warburton came out with a purpose in the first term and kicked 6.2 to 5.2 to take a surprising six-point lead at quarter time. Monbulk regrouped in the second quarter kicking 5.4 to 2.5 and the lead had swung in Monbulk’s favour by 11 points at half-time. Both sides kicked four goals in the third term and the momentum was still in Monbulk’s favour. Warburton staged a comeback in the last outscoring Monbulk by kicking 3.1 to 2.4, but the points finally went to Monbulk.

Olinda shares second spot on the ladder after a win over Gembrook on Saturday. Olinda started in fine form kicking 5.4 to one behind in the first term and earning a 33-point lead at quarter time. Gembrook held Olinda to only two goals in the second quarter and kicked two themselves but the lead was going to be tough to claw back. The third quarter was a battle of defences with Olinda only managing to kick one goal but they did hold Gembrook scoreless. The last quarter was freer flowing as Olinda kicked 4.6 to Gembrook’s 3.1 but the game was well and truly won.

Woori Yallock has kept themselves in touch with the top three after a solid win over second-placed Wandin. The first quarter was tight with only two goals being kicked and a one-point lead to Wandin. Woori Yallock had most of the ball in the second term and kicked 3.6 to 1.1 to take a 16-point lead into the main break. Wandin had advantage of any wind in the third quarter and kicked 2.5 to 3.1 but could not convert when it was needed. Inaccuracy was the order of the day as Woori Yallock kicked 2.5 to 3.2 in the last but managed to hang on and come away with a celebrated win.

Alexandra 20.10(130) d Thornton Eildon 13.9(87)
Alexandra’s finals hopes are still well and truly alive after a 43-point win on Saturday. Alexandra started up with five goals in the first term to three and had the jump on Thornton by 16 points at quarter time. Alexandra kicked five straight in the second quarter while Thornton kicked 4.4 and could have had a real impact if they were accurate in front of goal. Alexandra stepped it up in the third term with six goals to three and their lead had blown out to 38 points at three-quarter time. The scoring seesawed in the last with seven goals being kicked but the honours went to Alexandra at the final siren.

Kinglake 9.16(70) d Powelltown 7.13(55)
Kinglake share fifth spot with Alexandra and Powelltown have dropped down to fourth after a morale-boosting win by Kinglake on Saturday. Kinglake got the advantage in the first term and held a slim lead by five points at quarter-time. Powelltown regrouped and got their game going in the second quarter and kicked 4.2 to 1.5 to take the lead by 10 points at the main break. Kinglake played some good footy in the third term and if they were accurate in front of goal the margin could have been well and truly out of reach but they recaptured the lead by 16 points at three-quarter time. Powelltown had run out of steam by the last and could not find the gear they needed to put this one away. Both sides only kicked one goal but it was Kinglake in the end.

Seville is now two wins clear of Yarra Glen in second spot and has firmed as the ones to challenge Belgrave during the finals. They started off in fine form kicking 5.2 to 1.1 in the first term and they looked like they were in for a big one. An eight goal second quarter and the writing was on the wall for Yea as Seville took a 68-point lead into half-time. They came out and kicked another six goals in the third term and the lead was now 75 points. They certainly put their foot down in the last and held Yea goalless but kicked an impressive 12 goals to finish off the game.

Belgrave are one game clear on top of the ladder after squashing any chance for finals this year for Yarra Junction. The first quarter was an even tussle but Belgrave took a lead of 15 points into the second quarter. The second term was much of the same with Belgrave kicking 4.6 to 4.5 and the lead to Yarra Junction’s credit was only 16 points. It was a low scoring affair in the third quarter, Belgrave could only manage 2.3 to Junction’s 1.3 but they still had control of the game. The last quarter was a different story when Belgrave fired up and kicked 12.1 to 4.2 and the win was convincing at the final siren.
