From trash to treasured cows

ROTARY Club of Healesville members are turning trash into treasure in aid of a Ugandan community.
The club is holding a Car Boot Sale on Sunday 7 June with all proceeds going towards the Milking Cow Herd Humanitarian Project.
The project’s aim is to buy cows to provide milk for hungry children, supporting both widows and orphans in the deprived villages of Kampala, Uganda.
The Rotary Club of Healesville has raised close to $2000 through car boot sales in the past, and with the aid of other fundraisers has been able to buy two cows for overseas communities.
Healesville Rotarian Wilma Best said that The Rotary Club of Kampala has developed criteria for the selection of who the cows go to with the most needy widow who is caring for orphans topping the list. “The cow is a Friesian cross in calf and this cow provides roughly 15 litres of milk a day,” Mrs Best said. “It provides enough to feed many orphans and allows the widow to trade any surplus milk for other goods such as fresh vegetables. The Milking Cow project is a rewarding experience for Rotarians as the milking cow is a gift of life to a whole family and in the process supports the village.”
In August two members, including Rotarian Mrs Best, from the Rotary Club of Healesville will visit Kampala and hand over the cow donated through funds raised at the car boot sale in June.
The Healesville Rotary Club Car Boot Sale will be on Sunday 7 June from 9am to 2pm in the car park of Le Pine Heritage Funerals at 102 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.
There will be a sausage sizzle and tea and coffee available on the day as well as a raffle drawn on the day.
