Driver education

THE Shire of Yarra Ranges is urging drivers to reduce their speed on local roads with the launch of a driver education program.
The campaign Not So Fast will see the addition of three speed trailers which will be located in various locations across the shire.
The council has identified 19 local streets for the intensive education campaign which aims to encourage motorists to slow down in residential streets.
Speed trailers will be deployed to residential streets with a history of traffic exceeding the speed limit.
This 12month program will also involve the use of 50 km/h stickers which will be displayed on the sides of rubbish bins, along with the distribution of information fliers to local residents.
Mayor David Hodgett said the campaign would see the shire, local police and residents working together to encourage motorists to slow down.
Stickers will be distributed to residents involved in the Not So Fast campaign, living on a 50km/h street.
“The stickers will help provide a regular reminder to motorists using those roads to slow down,” Cr Hodgett said.
“In addition our speed advisory trailers will help to reinforce the safe driving message as well as collect valuable data to help us to continue to improve traffic safety.”
Local police will also support the program through an increased presence and the use of speed guns.
