THE Australian rally fraternity was shocked by the death of veteran rally driver Gary Tierney in Western Australia last week.
Mr Tierney’s connection with Healesville, however, was little known.
He was the new owner of the BP service station which was due to open in Healesville yesterday (Monday).
Mick Donkin, who owns the freehold of the property, said he too was shocked to learn of Mr Tierney’s death.
He had met Mr Tierney and his navigator, who was also killed in the crash.
He described the 60-year-old family man as a nice bloke who loved his rally driving.
No information was available on a new opening date.
