Trail on track

By Kath Gannaway
A CAMP-SITE that was popular with horseriders on the Bicentennial National Trail is being rebuilt more than a year after being destroyed in the Black Saturday fires.
Members of The Alexandra and District Horseman’s and Marysville Saddle Tramps (MST), working with Marysville Department of Sustainability and Environment, chose the Anzac Day weekend to start rebuilding the horse yards at the historical Andersons Mill site between Narbethong and Marysville.
The yards, originally built 12 years ago, have seen more than 1500 horses use the area as a trail riding base according to MST’s spokeswoman Jo-Anne Kasch.
“We all recognised that the sooner this facility was replaced the faster the horse riders of Victoria could return and enjoy the district again,” Ms Kasch said.
“Volunteers have offered to help in various ways, either by putting up rails, making a cuppa or just being there for support,” said Ms Kasch who added that the yards were a credit to the Murrindindi Shire community and to Victoria.
While the yards still have a way to go before they are complete, Ms Kasch said everyone involved in the rebuilding was looking forward to the opening of a much-needed new public horse camping area near Marysville.
