Shannon wins Winter Cup

By Dennis Fuller
WHEN the tumult and shouting died down at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, Dean Shannon (15) stood tall above the pack to win the Sam Ritchie Winter Cup.
He went in with a narrow lead but stood up to the challenge of young gun, Riley Steven (22) to score 115 points for the three rounds from Steven’s 112.
Four strokes back in third place was Ben Balfour (14) with 108.
The daily comp for the also rans was won by David Macket (33) with a great score of 41 points.
This also put him atop the C Grade crowd as well.
Captain, Ross Martin was best of the A Graders with 37 points while Steven’s 38 points allowed him to be top of the B Graders.
Of the others, only Martin Yeats (8) managed to play to his handicap for 36 points.
Peter Clowes was nearest the pin on the fourth, David Aitken on the seventh, Mackey the 12th, Yeats the 13th and Stevens rounded of a great day’s golf by picking up the pro pin on the 18th.
The ladies’ comp was won by Ianna Scott who led the field all day to win in a canter. I am looking forward to many more great rounds from this budding star.
On Wednesday, the Often Faded Golf (OFG) using OFG handicap was a tie between Kevin Miller (35) and Ernest Tong (23).
They both scored 34 points in slightly soggy conditions and rather than face a putt-off decided to share the spoils on the day.
Next Saturday the competition involves joining holes together.
The second and the third are joined, as are the eighth and ninth, the 11th to the 12th and the 18th to the first.
This will suit the big hitters as well as those who can place their balls where they are required, if there is any such golfer to be found.
