‘COMMUNITY’ is the key word on which Woori Community House hangs its hat.
“That is what it is all about,” co-ordinator Sonja Mazar said.
“We are a community-based organisation dedicated to providing quality recreational and educational programs and information, support and advocacy to the people of the Yarra Valley in the development of their cultural, health, economic and personal needs,” she said.
Woori Community House is located in the heart of the Woori Yallock shopping and business precinct.
Courses range from community enrichment programs such as planning events for community groups to personal health, fun and development through yoga, guided visualisation and meditation, social drawing classes, Zumba and Bollywood dance, to certificate level courses in food safety and responsible service of alcohol.
“In conjunction with Barry Plant Woori Yallock, on the second Tuesday of each month we welcome seniors in for a free morning tea and outings to places of interest,” Sonja said.
The Community House is also open to community members and groups as a local meeting place.
Public internet access is available at a low cost with times allocated for school students, and, as in previous years, free assistance with tax returns is on offer until 31 October.
“Volunteers are the heart of our Community House and we welcome people to come along and join the great team we have here from all walks of life, sharing ideas and skills,” Sonja said.
A new, modern kitchen is the latest of a number of improvements and Sonja took the opportunity last week on behalf of the WCH committee, staff and volunteers to thank volunteers Ross and Rhonda McKenzie for their dedicated hard work and efforts in seeing the project completed.
She was able also to personally thank Yarra Ranges’ Cr Chris Templer for a donation of $1500 which went towards the kitchen renovations.
Cr Templer said he was enormously impressed by the service provided to the community by Woori Community House through their diverse programs and courses.
“It is great to see how much they can get done here and what they contribute to a wide range of people in their community,” he said. “I jumped at the opportunity to help to update the facilities here,” he said.
Sonja said Woori Community House open to everyone.
“We encourage everyone to come in and see what we have to offer,” she said.
