Wandin whacks Warby

By Stephen Walter
WANDIN pulled off the upset of the round, defeating Warburton Millgrove by eight points at the weekend.
At half-time, Warburton led by four points but Wandin had more of the ball and six more scoring shots.
Wandin played its best football in the third term, booting five goals to two, and at three-quarter-time had the momentum with a 14-point lead.
The last quarter was a battle of the backlines as goals were hard to come by. Wandin scored only one goal for the quarter and while Warburton kicked two it wasn’t enough to stop Wandin clinching its third win of the season.
Wandin 12.17 (89) d Warburton Millgrove 12.9 (81)
Best – Wandin: Daniel King, Mathew Peterson, Wayne Preston. Warburton Millgrove: Adam Newing, Kurt Henderson, Ben Caneva.

MONBULK had its game against Silvan wrapped up at half-time with seven goals in the first quarter and another seven in the second. Silvan managed only three goals for the half.
Monbulk added a further 10 goals in the second half while Silvan was a little more competitive with five.
Monbulk 24.11 (155) d Silvan 8.10 (58)
Best – Monbulk: Dylan Werts (seven goals), Jared Devers, Chris Mitchell. Silvan: David Bissels (six goals), Darcy Wale, Stephen Andrews, Scott Stegheuis.

MOUNT Evelyn put in another workmanlike performance against Healesville as it readied itself for finals.
Playing a consistent four-quarter game it blew the lead out to eight goals by three-quarter-time.
The last quarter was an entertaining affair with both teams booting six goals.
Mount Evelyn 19.15 (129) d Healesville 11.14 (80)
Best – Mount Evelyn: Benjamin Farrugia, Jon Dalton, Callum Urquhart. Healesville: Daniel Plozza, Dylan Anderson, Casey Adams.

GEMBROOK dealt Upwey a 61-point hiding and if the ladder stays the way it is, the two teams will play each other again in the first week of finals.
Gembrook got out to a 22-point lead at half-time and should have been further in front with 24 scoring shots to 12.
Gembrook played a lot more direct football in the second half and it showed on the scoreboard as it added a further 13 goals to Upwey’s seven.
Gembrook’s Andrew Shipp continued his fine season adding eight goals to his tally.
Gembrook Cockatoo 21.25 (151) d Upwey Tecoma 13.12 (90)
Best – Gembrook Cockatoo: Andrew Walker, Stephen Robins, Craig Clarke. Upwey Tecoma: Christopher Hayes, David van Hoorn, Tom Hedge.

AS GOOD as Olinda has been recently, come finals time it is likely to find that a lot of work remains to be done.
The first half against Woori Yallock was fairly even with Woori leading by just three goals.
But it blew the game open in the third with a nine-goal term to stretch the margin to a match-winning lead.
Olinda did outscore Woori three goals to two in the last quarter but it was too little too late.
Woori Yallock 22.9 (141) d Olinda Ferny Creek 14.12 (96)
Best – Woori Yallock: Brendan Sneddon, Patrick Sharp, Matthew Stolarczyk. Olinda Ferny Creek: Nick Broomhall, Dylan Troutman, Scott Tregoning.

ALEXANDRA climbed off the bottom of the ladder after a great win over Kinglake and looked anything but a bottom side as it delivered a football lesson to its highly fancied opposition.
Alexandra held a slender lead at quarter and half-time, but it was Kinglake in the third quarter that looked as though it might get on top, booting five goals to two for the term and a two-goal lead.
The last quarter was arguably Alexandra’s best for the year with seven majors to Kinglake’s four to wrestle back the lead and an outstanding victory.
Alexandra 17.8 (110) d Kinglake 16.8 (104)
Best – Alexandra: Daniel Steel, Michael Bretherton, Damien Toomey. Kinglake: Benjamin Munn, Jarrad Heal, Brent Gallichio (seven goals).

IF YARRA Junction wanted a contest before finals it got its wish against Emerald, which jumped out of the blocks and led by four goals at quarter-time.
Junction had plenty of chances in the second quarter but an inaccurate 3.10 still saw it trailing by nine points halfway.
Yarra Junction looked more polished in the third and although it kicked only three goals it held Emerald to three points for the term. Emerald outscored Junction three goals to two in the final quarter but fell just a point short of victory.
Yarra Junction 9.15 (69) d Emerald 10.8 (68). Best – Yarra Junction: Nathan Fall, Curtis Wright, Brad Charman. Emerald: Alexander Hellriegel, Jason Cousins, Callum Benoiton.

IT TOOK Seville until the final quarter to shake off a determined Powelltown, which held a one-point lead at half-time thanks to Seville’s inaccuracy.
Seville scored three goals to one in the third and at the last change was just two goals up.
Seville finally threw off the shackles in the last quarter to boot six goals to one, winning the game but not in the convincing style it would have liked.
Seville 12.24 (96) d Powelltown 6.12 (48)
Best – Seville: Brent Pereira, Mark Cecere, Chris Tanner. Powelltown: Lindon Walker, Sam Camilleri, Luke Darwall.

IN A somewhat spiteful game, Yarra Glen emerged victorious over Belgrave after a terrific second half of football.
Belgrave was right in touch at half-time, trailing by 22 points, but was held scoreless in the third quarter in which Yarra Glen should have blown it away but booted 3.8.
Yarra Glen added four goals in the last while Belgrave managed two.
Yarra Glen 16.14 (110) d Belgrave 7.6 (48).
Best – Yarra Glen: Ryan Kueffer (seven goals), Peter Moate, David Watt. Belgrave: Ben Fitzgerald, Nicholas Wakefield, Dean Lunn-Wilson.

YEA moved one game clear in fifth spot after its 21-point win over Thornton. Yea looked to have the edge all day even though the margin was never that big.
It held on to a three to four-goal lead for most of the day and every time Thornton threatened, Yea had the answers to kill off the challenge.
Yea 15.6 (96) d Thornton Eildon 10.15 (75)
Best – Yea: Peter Kiss, Rhys Koulson, James Clavarino.
