With warm weather arriving, it is the perfect time to get out and enjoy our public parks and spaces and make the most of the sunshine.
Unfortunately, Yarra Glen residents have been disappointed to find a number of young trees torn out of the ground or damaged at the McKenzie Reserve, and it isn’t the first time.
Acting Director of Environment and Infrastructure at Yarra Ranges Council, Phil Murton said Council is committed to planting trees to beautify our public spaces, improve community health and wellbeing and benefit the environment.
“We filed a police report on Friday, 6 January, regarding 12 trees damaged in McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen,” he said.
“Over the last 18 months, about 20 trees have been vandalised or damaged in the park, which is extremely disappointing.”
Residents took to Facebook to express their annoyance at the issue, with the trees just beginning to establish themselves after similarly being damaged another time.
“Council will work to replace the vandalised trees and explore planting methods that discourage opportunistic vandalism, particularly in our parks and reserves,” said Mr Murton.
“We encourage anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000.”
Another comment also claimed a nearby bin had been set on fire as well.
