DINNER at Darron’s has become a Tuesday night institution for around 60 people in Healesville.
On 12 October, the Darron Honey Centre at the Uniting Church had a full house as regulars and past patrons got together for the fifth birthday of the community meal run by HICCI (Healesville Inter-Church Community Care Inc.).
There was a party atmosphere, with balloons, gifts, entertainment by musician and comedian Peter Denahy and birthday cakes.
Among the special guests were Marilyn King – whose idea it was to start a community meal in Healesville – and Peter Skilbeck, the recently retired president of HICCI, under whose passionate support Dinner at Darron’s has proved to be a place where people of all ages and backgrounds share a meal in a safe and friendly environment.
The Salvation Army and Yarra Ranges Council provided the start-up funds and it continues thanks to donations, small grants and the fantastic effort of six teams of volunteers who work the kitchen and dining room.
HICCI chief executive officer Kerri Goding said 14,400 meals had been served in the past five years and she thanked everyone who makes it happen.
“To this day, the six teams comprise the same team leaders and many of the same volunteers who commenced five years ago,” she added.
Ms Goding thanked the Healesville Racing Club for funding the birthday dinner and Healesville businesses for their support, including Ray White Real Estate, who sponsor a meal each month.
“Finally, our meal would not be such a resounding success without all of you who come each week,” she said, tapping in to the party atmosphere.
“In good weather or bad, in times of stress or celebration, you come to enjoy a good basic meal and the fellowship and companionship of everyone who is here today.”
Everyone is welcome at Darron’s place; no need to book – Tuesdays between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.
Any businesses who would like to sponsor a meal can contact HICCI on 5965 3529.
