Eleventh hour honour

By Mara Pattison-Sowden
MORE than 55 people turned out in warm weather at Yarra Junction’s cenotaph last Thursday to pay their respects to fallen soldiers.
Upper Yarra RSL held the service in Memorial Park on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to remember and pay tribute to the ex-and serving Australian soldiers.
Upper Yarra RSL member and former national serviceman Eric Barkway led the service, after which Mavis Clarke laid a wreath, and the public came forth to lay poppies at the cenotaph.
Mr Barkway recently went to Canberra for the dedication of a memorial for national servicemen, and while there, visited the National Archives of Australia where he was able to find detailed information about the war experiences of his grandfather.
The archives can also be accessed at www.naa.gov.au
