Kids show film talent

By Kath Gannaway
THE work of Yarra Valley filmmakers … Australia’s, perhaps the world’s, next wave of filmmakers will go on show at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre in Warburton in December.
Over the past year Yarra Ranges Council, in partnership with a number of local primary schools has delivered the Film in Schools Project across the Yarra Valley.
“The aim of the project was to encourage students and teachers to have a go at making films, no matter what experience or level of technology was available,” said Yarra Ranges Council regional arts co-ordinator Jenny Davies.
Professional filmmakers Donna Swan and Paul Townsend ran workshops with students and teachers over two terms with a specially designed step-by-step approach to creating visual story telling, using available technology within each school.
Ms Davies said the result was an inspiring one-hour of short films written, directed, filmed and edited by students aged 10 to 12.
“This is an amazing achievement for these first time filmmakers,” said Ms Davies congratulating the students and teachers of Warburton, Milwarra, Wesburn, Gladysdale, Healesville and Badger Creek primary schools on their productions.
The films will be shown on Friday 10 December at 5pm, and on Saturday, 11 December at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm, offering an opportunity for the broader community to see the next wave of filmmakers tackling the genres of comedy, drama, documentary and suspense.
