THE return of polo to the Yarra Valley was marked with a two-day tournament at Flowerfield in Coldstream on Saturday and Sunday 19 and 20 March.
Polo was first played at Flowerfield in 1952 and continued with members of the Yarra Glen and Lilydale Polo Club participating in tournaments there until about 10 years ago.
The return of polo was celebrated on and off the field. Some 117 people attended the Polo Ball in a huge marquee on the Saturday night and 600 spectators lined the field for Sunday’s finals in the Coldstream and Flowerfield cups.
In a hard-fought final between Yarra Valley Pinot and Victorian Polo Academy the home team came away with the prestigious Flowerfield Cup.
The Coldstream Cup went to Karolos Construction.
Victorian Polo Association president John Taylor said the players should feel privileged to be playing for trophies with such a rich history.
“It is a wonderful trip down memory lane for me to see so many of the past and present players. I played against their fathers and uncles and to now see their sons playing is wonderful,” he said.
YVPC spokeswoman Julie Sampson said the committee was delighted with the weekend.
“We were thrilled to have that stunning weather, the crowd and were just so happy with the number of teams,” she said. “To have 10 teams participating was fantastic.”
