HEALESVILLE Primary School’s grade three students found that while the dough is fantastic, a career as a baker is not all about the icing on the cake!
“Don’t think of becoming a baker unless you can get up very, very early in the morning,” said Wild Grains Bakehouse owner Joe Kruyer.
But the 2am starts were soon forgotten as the kids pushed and pulled their dough into shape and made the most of smarties and sprinkles to decorate their morning tea.
Mr Kruyer said he was happy to have the kids come in to get some hands-on experience and see what goes behind the counter at a local business.
“They asked lots of questions while their scrolls were baking and were especially keen to know about the equipment and what it does,” he said.
And, of course, the seemingly magical role yeast plays in making a good roll, scroll or loaf of bread, was raised! – Kath Gannaway
