YARRA Glen Chamber of Commerce is mounting a campaign to get Yarra Ranges Council to “unsign” their support for Wilderness Society’s Ethical Paper Pledge.
Chamber representative and local businessman Bill Verhagen said the chamber was supporting the Lilydale Chamber of Commerce’s stand demanding the council rescind the motion, which it said was to the detriment of the Yarra Ranges economy.
Following the council’s decision to sign the EPP, the State Government withdrew its support for discussions which could see VicForests relocate their office to Yarra Glen.
Mr Verhagen said Yarra Ranges Council’s decision had cost anywhere between 50 and 80 jobs for the town.
A public meeting will be held in Yarra Glen on Monday 4 July, at the Uniting Church Hall at 7.30pm aimed at getting the council to reverse its decision.
Mr Verhagen can be contacted on 0417 371 987.
