Art on display in the library

By Mara Pattison-Sowden
REGULAR visitors were surprised last week when they walked in to find six talented artists displaying their work in Yarra Junction’s library.
Book displays were replaced with paintings, drawings and pastels covering the shelves for the morning of Saturday 4 June.
The artists frequent the library twice a month for a drop-in social session to work, share ideas and chat, and this was the first time they had exhibited as a group.
Artist Jennifer Knight, who enjoys painting watercolours, said the most exciting thing was “just having people walking around looking at our work.”
“People ask you who is that or where is that and for some of them I don’t have a place, or I take an idea and change it,” she said.
There were about 45 paintings and several sculptures by artists Freda Borke, Sandy Carroll, Garry Bell, Pam Kroese, Alan Bates and Jennifer Knight.
Library manager Sandra Hamnett said they had a hundred people more than they regularly would on a Saturday morning, many of whom stayed to browse the book collection.
The exhibition was for the morning only, but the group is planning a longer exhibition for later in the year.
The Mixed Media Group meets on the first and third Saturday of the month from 10am to 1pm at Yarra Junction Library.
