YARRA Ranges’ most promising young stayers took to the track at the Yarra Valley Racing Centre last week, proving it is not only four-legged runners that can draw a crowd at the races.
The stands were packed with supporters as hundreds of primary school students braved chilling winds and rain to compete in the division event of the Victorian School Sports cross-country competition.
Throughout the day students representing the Yarra Valley, Dandenong Ranges and Maroondah divisions delivered some impressive performances both in terms of times, stamina and determination.
Running on a heavy track, the 9 to 10-year-old girls and boys were well and truly tested as they completed the two-kilometre course.
The course for the 11 and 12 to 13-year-old runners was even more challenging, taking in the vine-covered hill at the back of the grounds adding another kilometre to the course.
The first 10 in each section will go on to represent their schools in the Eastern Metropolitan Region – EMR Cross-Country back at Yarra Glen on Friday 24 June.
The secondary schools’ EMR competition will also be held at Yarra Glen on that date, the first time primary and secondary schools have come together, to make it a mega-sports event.
