Eat your greens

VILLAGE Greens Organic Fruit and Veg shop in Yarra Junction is a great first stop for all healthy eating requirements.
Since taking over the shop Marina and Tim Stewart have expanded the range of organic, biodynamic and conventional fruit and vegetables, fresh from the wholesale market four days a week, and added a selection of additional grocery items which include a range of delicious breads, honeys, salad dressings, eggs, non-dairy milks, juices, non-alcoholic wines, jams, teas and coffees, pasta, flours, beans and canned goods.
Tim said a growing awareness of the benefits of eating organic produce, and of food intolerances has resulted in an increased demand for organic foods.
“We try to get as much as organic and bio-dynamic as we can and certainly have everything that is seasonably available.
“The shelves reflect the changing seasons with stone fruits finishing and the new season’s apples coming in,” he said.
Tim said a lot of the organic growers are supplying heritage varieties of apples, such as Cox’s orange pippin, an old English variety, and they also like to introduce unusual fruit such as Jak fruit – the largest tree-born tropical fruit.
“We find the organic buyer a little more adventurous in what they eat and more willing to try new varieties,” Tim said.
For Village Greens, and its growing customer base, a combination of variety, quality and competitive prices is proving a successful mix.
Village Greens is open Monday to Saturday.
