Hearing aid cuts down the racket

A DEVICE the size of two weetbix is set to quieten things down in one Yarra Ranges home.
Yarra Junction resident Thomas Hughes no longer has to have his television blaring, thanks to his new assistive listening device.
The device was part of a hamper won by Mr Hughes as part of Australian Hearings relationships promotion in February.
Assistive listening devices (ALD) effectively reduce or cut-out background noise, enabling clearer hearing in a noisy environment.
They are designed to assist people when watching television alone or with members of the family, communicating over the phone or going to public venues such as cinemas. Australian Hearing district manager in Croydon, Nella All, said assistive listening devices are a great tool for enhancing people’s hearing.
“These devices can provide clearer hearing by reducing the background noise during a personal conversation while watching TV or while on the phone,” she said.
“They suit all sorts of people because there are ALDs for general communication, the TV and all types of phone, including mobiles and land lines.
“You can have a very mild hearing loss and not be ready for a hearing aid, but you might use an ALD for the TV.”
ALDs usually fall into two categories: those that work with hearing aids using a telecoil in the hearing aid; and those that do not require a hearing aid but can amplify sound and feed it through headphones.
Australian Hearing offers a wide range of assistive listening devices to suit individual listening needs.
These can be used with, or instead of, a hearing aid to help people hear sound from a distance, including the television, telephone, a group of people around a table, or someone in the back seat of the car.
If you want to find out how an assistive listening device may be able to help you or someone you know, contact Australian Hearing Croydon on 9724 9144.
