AFTER 60 years of marriage, Doug and Betty Lawson are on the same wavelength about a lot of things.
The couple – who were married at St Luke’s church at Murrindindi on 2 June 1951 – celebrated their diamond anniversary at the Yarra Glen Grand Hotel last month.
Doug was a drummer in a band when the couple met at a dance at Murrindindi.
Is it true that the drummer is the “bad boy” of the band? And, Betty … was that the attraction?
“I think that’s sort of how it happened,” said Doug. “I suppose I thought ‘she’s a good-lookin’ piece … I’d better make myself known to her at supper time”, he recalled.
The couple are also life-members of the Glenburn Fire Brigade where Doug was captain for many years, and still attends fire calls, and he and Betty continue to help out with the monthly community breakfasts.
Their thoughts are also in sync when it comes to advice on marriage.
“Married life is not all a bed of roses, but whatever happens, just sit down at the end of the day and talk it out,” said Doug.
“It’s so true,” adds Betty.
