YARRA RANGES Highway Patrol will be cracking down on headlamps that don’t comply with the Australian Design Rules.
YRHP’s Senior Constable Ron Veldman said there had been numerous complaints to officers at Healesville about the number of vehicles in and around Healesville with after-market HID high indensity discharge gas headlamp globes fitted on low beam.
“These lights produce an extremely bright, white light at low wattage and are often fitted to late model European and other high-end vehicles,” Sen Const Veldman explained.
He said those vehicles had the correct reflectors, but the problem came when they were fitted on other vehicles.
Sen Const Veldman said the Australian Design Rules required an efficient headlamp cleaning system and an automatic levelling system for the globes to be fitted.
“When other drivers are confronted with these after-market fitted lamps, which are extremely bright and dazzling and can’t be correctly focused, they are blinded to oncoming traffic,” he said.
“Anyone detected by police with lamps which don’t comply with the ADRs will be ordered to remove them.”
Substantial fines can be issued for non-compliance.
