SHIRE of Yarra Ranges residents are being invited to take part in a monster plant sale at Karwarra Gardens in Kalorama at the end of this week.
Yarra Ranges councillor Graham Warren said the plant sale was the perfect opportunity for residents to see the vast array of Australian plants on offer.
“Karwarra Garden is a fantastic asset to the shire and a great way of showcasing native flora and fauna,” he said.
“I would encourage members of the community to visit the gardens and see first-hand the beautiful results that can be achieved by planting Australian native species.”
Cr Warren said plants will be on offer ranging from very hardy, easy to grow species to the more unusual.
This year, as well as many shade tolerant and bird-attracting plants, there will also be a selection of plants suitable for cottage gardens and some indigenous grasses and lilies.
Entry to the garden will also be free on the day to allow the community to see mature plants before buying. Staff will be on hand throughout the day to offer advice on appropriate planting and landscaping your garden.
“We live in an environmentally sensitive area and it’s important that we preserve it by reducing the number of weeds and exotic species in our gardens. They have the potential to spread into our forests and destroy valuable vegetation,” Cr Warren said.
As part of the sale some standard pots will be specially priced and tube stock will be priced at $2.50. Buy five standard plants and get the sixth plant free.
The five-acre botanic garden is behind the Kalorama Memorial Reserve on Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, Kalorama.
The plant sale will be on Sunday, 30 April between 10am and 4pm.
