THE Mt Toolebewong Landcare group has received a $2800 boost to help setup a weed control and bio-diversity protection program around the Boggy Creek at Badger Creek.
The group received Victorian Government funding for the project through the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority’s (PPWCMA) Community Grants program.
The biodiversity project aims to reduce weed species on private land along the creek and demonstrate to landholders suitable methods for weed control.
The end result will be the prevention of further native habitat deterioration along the little-known Boggy Creek, a tributary of the Yarra River.
PPWCMA board member and former Shire of Yarra Ranges councillor Di Moore said the project would include a survey of invasive weeds.
Landcare group president Norm Casey accepted the grant on behalf of the group.
He said the group provided manpower, knowledge and equipment to private landowners with the aim of assisting them to look after their properties.
The Boggy Creek starts on Mt Toolebewong and runs through Healesville Sanctuary to the Piccaninny Creek and on to the Watts River which feeds into the Yarra.
The Mt Toolebewong Landcare Group has a stock of equipment available for loan to private landowner members.
The group is holding a weed training and identification session at Badger Creek Primary School on Sunday, 4 June from 3pm to 5pm.
