ORGANISERS are encouraging local communities to get behind the 2006 NGK Rally of Melbourne with less than two months to go until the event is unleashed on the Yarra Valley.
Set on the unforgiving roads of the Yarra Valley from 22 to 24 September, the NGK Rally of Melbourne is an annual highlight of the Yarra Valley for almost 20 years.
Each year, local groups and individuals take part in a variety of volunteer roles and NGK Rally of Melbourne organisers, Justin Hunt and Neil Cuthbert, are once again encouraging local people to join the stars of the show for a weekend of high-powered rallying.
They have put the call out for volunteers to join in the excitement by becoming an official volunteer in a range of roles that let people utilise their specific skills, or to simply to be involved as a vital part of one of Australia’s great motor sport events.
Volunteers are encouraged to get involved in this year’s proceedings to lend a helping hand, just as the local Country Fire Authority (CFA) has done for many years, ensuring the safety of all involved and successful running of the NGK Rally of Melbourne.
Mr Cuthbert said Victoria’s CFA has become a regular and essential player in ensuring the Rally of Melbourne can take place in a safe environment for both fans and competitors, willingly offering their services to event organisers when needed.
“The CFA have played an integral part in the success of the Rally of Melbourne in recent times, and their contribution doesn’t go un-noticed, we cannot thank them enough for their time and extraordinary efforts,” Mr Cuthbert said.
“It was only last year that we called on the CFA to lend a helping hand when an overnight storm threatened to stop the rally getting under way at all.
“A violent electrical storm left an enormous amount of trees and shrub all over the rally’s roads last year, and if not for groups like the CFA coming to the rescue, the event simply could not have gone ahead. We owe the smooth running of last year’s rally to the CFA.”
Just like the volunteers of the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics in Sydney, the volunteers of the NGK Rally of Melbourne will experience rallying in an up close and personal level that the public will never have the opportunity to be in.
