GULF Station’s heritage gardens are in line for a big dose of TLC under a Heritage Care project due to start soon.
Paige McAlpine of Heritage Care said permits are being sought from Heritage Victoria and a project management plan for the garden is under way in conjunction with the National Trust and Heritage Victoria.
Built in the 1850s, Gulf Station at Yarra Glen, now a National Trust property, has the most complete set of solid timber slab farm buildings in Victoria.
The gardens, which surround the original homestead, are a classic example of the formal, geometric layout adopted for small gardens of the Victorian era.
With the project due to start around the end of October, Heritage Care is looking for volunteers to work on the restoration of the garden.
“We are looking for people who can commit to two days a week for the six months duration of the project,” Ms McAlpine said.
“Staff from Rippon Lea and other National Trust properties will provide training in areas such as fruit tree pruning and general horticulture training.”
Other training includes occupational health and safety and first aid.
