Cricket night of honours

SILVAN Cricket Club’s Gary Frankovic took out the prestigious T.H.R Drummond Medal as Yarra Valley Cricket Association (YVCA) Cricketer of the Year on Friday night with 18 votes, just two ahead of Yarra Junction’s Stephen Flutter.
It was the third Drummond win for Frankovic who took top honours in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.
The V. J. Haag Medal for the Player of the Year in the R.A. Finger Trophy was a back-to-back win by Matt Tilney of Gruyere District Cricket Club. Following his Haag Medal win last year Tilney won on 18 votes in another close contest ahead of teammate Luke Sarre on 17.
The medals were presented at a packed YVCA 2005-06 Presentation Dinner held at Lilydale International on Friday night.
Other awards presented on the night included the Harry Emerson Memorial Award for Man of the Match in the Strachan Shield Final, won by Mt Evelyn’s Andrew Giblin and a new award, the E.R. “Ossie” Garner Medal, presented for Man of the Match in the R.A. Finger Trophy Final, won by Luke Sarre of Gruyere District Cricket Club.
The “John Lane Memorial Trophy” for the player of the series in Country Week was awarded to Andrew Giblin for an excellent series topped of by a century in the final.
Brent Clinch of Warburton won the Under 18 Player of the Series Medal.

The YVCA Team of the Year was also announced at the presentation dinner and, in batting order, started with Andrew Giblin (Mt Evelyn), followed by Glenn Newbery (Healesville), Gary Frankovic (Silvan) vice captain, Kane Jones (Mt Evelyn), Andrew Kay (Seville), Michael Walker (Warburton-Millgrove) captain, Liam Doughty (Coldstream), Geoff Sharp (Warburton-Millgrove), Andrew Sharp (Woori Yallock), Darren Edwards (Healesville), Wayne Ross (Wandin), Stephen Flutter (Yarra Junction) 12th man and with Dave Hurley and Rob Webb named as umpires for the prestigious ‘match’.
