A DECISION on the future of the former Sanitarium Factory at Warburton edged closer last week with a State Governmentappointed panel convening to make recommendations on the proposed Edgewater Resort development.
The hearing was held at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre in Warburton on Thursday, 21 July.
Shire of Yarra Ranges spokesperson James Martin said the twoperson panel was asked to make recommendations to the council on two aspects of the proposed development.
The first was the rezoning of part of the land currently zoned for industrial use to allow for a tourist development on the site.
Mr Martin said council had indicated it was in favour of a planning scheme amendment to allow the development.
The panel was also asked to consider a planning permit relating to the construction of a hotel and convention centre to be housed in the existing Sanitarium building, and the construction of two additional buildings for further accommodation. Mr Martin said council’s planning department expected a report from the panel within four to six weeks.
It will then go back to council for councillors to make a determination, with a decision expected in three to four months.
He said council had given in principal support for the development based on the proposed plans.
