THE Yarra Ranges Relay for Life was launched last Wednesday night at Lilydale by Shire of Yarra Ranges mayor Tim Heenan.
People involved in the relay came together, as Cr Heenan said, to hear more about it, meet fellow teams and committee members and to start getting excited about the day.
The Relay for Life is an overnight event, which this year will be held on November 17 and 18, at Morrison Reserve in Mount Evelyn.
Sean Davidson, Relay for Life Metro co-ordinator, said there would be 29 relays occurring across the state, each raising money for cancer research, services and education.
“By the end of the year, there will be $3.6 million raised,” he said.
Yarra Ranges chairmanager Lyndall Parsons said the relay was on target to be a huge success with a range of activities to keep the walkers entertained, including games, races and live music.
During the evening there is the candlelight ceremony, which is a time to remember those lost to cancer and to show support for those living with cancer.
Cr Heenan said the walk was not only to raise money for cancer research, services and education but a great way to participate in community activities.
“There are a lot of things which cement people in a community,” he said.
“Something like cancer in one’s life cements strangers and can cement a bond in a community.”
Cr Heenan spoke passionately about supporting the event and said he will be participating for the first time with fellow council members.
“I am looking forward to 17 and 18 November, I think we are going to have a great time and raise a bucket load of cash,” he said.
“A lot of time and dedication goes into running an event like this and we all know the money we raise is going to a very worthwhile cause,” he added.
“The Relay for Life is a great way to get involved in the community, people coming together, getting dressed up and you just keep walking and walking.
“Out of something so negative, comes something so positive,” he said.
