THE Yarra Glen community is mourning the tragic death of local resident Mick Johnson.
Mr Johnson, 47, died after the car he was driving collided with the trailer of another vehicle about 5.30pm on Monday, 9 April.
The collision occurred on the bridge over the Yarra River on the Melba Highway in Yarra Glen.
Senior Constable David Fitzgerald of Victoria Police said: “The driver was initially trapped but was eventually freed by emergency workers before being air-lifted to The Alfred hospital where he later died.”
Mr Johnson was an ex-player and life member of the Yarra Glen Football Club.
Club president Mark Mays said Mr Johnson would be remembered for his generosity.
“Mick was one of those blokes who was always willing to lend a hand,” Mr Mays recalled.
“You could always rely on him.
“He was a well-known face and he will be sadly missed by everyone.”
Mr Mays said the club is planning to observe a minute’s silence as part of a tribute to Mr Johnson at Yarra Glen’s first home game on 5 May.
Police from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have interviewed the driver of the other vehicle in order to prepare a report for the coroner.
