More than 150 people attended the official opening of the refurbished hall by McEwen MP Fran Bailey and Shire of Murrindindi mayor Lyn Gunter on Sunday, 19 February.
The hall, the oldest remaining public building in the district, has links dating back to the pioneers.
Chairwoman of the Kinglake West Mechanics Institute Hall and Reserves Committee, Bev Johns, said many of the community members at the opening had personal stories of the old days.
“The building catered for all kinds of social gatherings, with many people riding their horses over long distances to make use of the library,” she said.
In recent years, the hall had fallen into disrepair, with a new roof, toilets, kitchen and heating among improvements needed.
The project was funded with $103,100 from the Federal Government’s Regional Partnerships Program and $80,000 from the Shire of Murrindindi’s Open Space Funding.
